Red Cross of Central Ga. Deploys for Hurricane Irene

The Red Cross of Central Georgia moves volunteers, vehicles and supplies in order to respond to what is predicted to be the largest storm to hit the East Coast in more than 70 years.

Photos: A watch on the beaches in Jacksonville.

That's according to a Red Cross news release.

A hurricane watch has been issued for the North Carolina coast and the Red Cross has opened shelters in the state as evacuation orders go into effect.

In addition, more than 200 Red Cross mobile feeding vehicles are heading towards the coast to help people in the path of the storm, the release says.

The Pros and Cons of Summer

The Pros and Cons of Summer

We are finally halfway through the summer season! I know lots of people are looking forward to fall and winter because they want cooler weather, but there are SOME things about summer that I really like. I thought I would start a list of the pros and cons.

Pros

  • Going to the beach and/or hanging out at the pool
  • Ice cream galore
  • Fresh fruit and veggies
  • More sunlight= longer days

Cons

  • Oppressive heat & unbearable humidity
  • Longer days=harder for me and the rest of the morning crew to get to bed on time!
  • Most of rain is in the form of pop-up afternoon storms, which is not good for the drought because it typically isn’t widespread!

What are your favorite things about summer? Least favorite things?

It's Really Hot...

It's Really Hot...

I saw this sign while riding around town last week and made my husband turn around so I could take a picture! It’s funny, right? It may not be “hot as hell” like the sign implies, but temperatures have been hotter than normal for a while!

In June, we had 4 days where we hit 100+.

In July, we had 29 days with highs in the 90s and 18 of those days were 95 degrees or hotter.

So far this month, we have already hit the century mark twice!

Our average highs are in the lower 90s, so it’s not supposed to be THIS hot! Mother Nature has cranked up the heat this summer for us in addition to a good chunk of the country.

Dallas, Texas, has had 42 consecutive days of triple digits!

Memphis, Tennessee, is undergoing the hottest summer on record.

No real relief is in sight this week, so do your best to stay cool!  I’m using the hot weather as a good excuse to eat lots of ice cream J
