Dr. Sonny Ramaswamy, newly appointed head of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), will speak at the Fort Valley State University Pettigrew Center July 26 at 1 p.m. Ramaswamy will discuss his vision for NIFA and the agency’s role in enhancing agriculture, education and research. The event is free and the public is invited to attend.

Prior to his appointment in May as NIFA director, Ramaswamy was dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences at Oregon State University for three years. While at OSU he oversaw the college’s academic programs on the main campus in Corvallis and directed the school’s research programs at 11 branch experiment stations. 

Ramaswamy’s vast résumé includes faculty appointments at several universities, including Purdue University, Kansas State University, Mississippi State University and Michigan State University.

He has acquired grants from numerous federal agencies such as the USDA, National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S Agency for International Development. Ramaswamy has published nearly 150 articles and book chapters and has written a book. He has also won numerous awards for his work as a scientist and department head.

NIFA is an agency Congress created through the Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008. NIFA’s main function is to promote knowledge of agriculture, environment, and human health by supporting research, education and extension programs through land-grant universities, such as Fort Valley State.
