Book Chronicles Fort Valley State's History
News

Fort Valley State University was established more than 100 years ago.

Its history is chronicled in a special book.

"When there is a need to know, that book is where you go to. I'm always helping students. So yes, I keep looking at the book all the time," says library interim director Frank Mahitab.

Located in the archives section on the second floor, "Light in the Valley" documents the university's history.

It's a book Mahitab keeps picking up.

"It really reflects well on how the university began as an industrial school," he says.

And how it grew from college to university status. The 200 pages are filled with pictures and words that take the reader on a journey.

National history scholar Donnie Bellamy delved into the past to celebrate the school's centennial birthday in 1995.

A year later, the book was published.

It took Bellamy 50 years of research before he put pen to paper.

Bellamy chronicled the past, now he's part of the school's history.

A history that for 13 years Mahitab keeps reading
