The Peach County Sheriff has identified a man found dead on railroad tracks near Byron early Friday.
Sheriff Terry Deese says he is 31-year-old Guy Loyd Campbell.
He said they're still investigating how he died and why he was on the tracks. Deese says they're not sure whether the man died before or after being hit by a train around 6 a.m.
"We still don't know what he was doing on the tracks at that time in the morning," Deese said.
He said Campbell lived about a quarter-mile from the tracks and his wife last saw him around 4:40 a.m.
'He grew up on those tracks, so it's strange that he got hit," said Deese.
He said they received a call from Norfolk Southern Railroad around 6 a.m., saying they saw a man on the tracks.
Deese said the man's injuries lead them to believe he was hit by a train earlier in the night, though they're not sure which train hit him.
The sheriff said they're working with railroad police and will continue to investigate. An autopsy will be scheduled Monday to determine the cause of death.
