GBI investigating Roberta mayor | News
The GBI says it is investigating several reported clashes between the mayor of Roberta and her family and the city's police.
That comes after a Roberta police officer claimed he was fired filing a compliant after a traffic stop involving the mayor's daughter.
J.T. Ricketson, the special agent in charge of the GBI's Perry office confirmed they are investigating the Mayor Becky Smith.
"We started yesterday, at the request of District Attorney, David Cooke," Ricketson said.
"We are checking into an October traffic stop and the subsequent actions by the Mayor and the officer," Ricketson said.
He said he couldn't comment further because the investigation is ongoing.
The mayor's husband, Jack Smith, got into a fight in March with Roberta police Chief Benjamin Thomas. The GBI was called in during that time to investigate that incident as well.
"Based on all of the reports my office reviewed between the officer and the Mayor and her family, I asked the GBI to complete their own investigation," Cooke said. "The GBI just needs to look at the case and see if there even is a base for charges. Everyone's innocent until proven guilty and this case is no different than any other."
We reached out to Mayor Becky Smith who said she had no idea she was being investigated by the GBI. She said, "no comment."
