Study ranks FVSU number 1 for African-American math graduates

Fort Valley State beat out some Ivy League schools, such as Harvard and Georgetown, when it comes to African-American math graduates.

An academic journal, Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, recently named the university number one in the nation in producing African-American math graduates.

Rocio Castillo is a sophomore math major at FVSU and wants to get a second degree in geosciences.

"When you have a degree in [math], it's almost like you can almost go anywhere and say, 'Hey, look, I have this. I can work with you to basically mold myself into anything you want from me because I have a math degree'," she said.

Castillo is in the university's Cooperative Developmental Energy Program, or CDEP.

The program helps minority and female students secure energy-related careers through networking and internships, and takes in about 30 to 40 students each year.

"We wanted to make sure that when our students transferred that they were okay particularly in math skills," said Dr. Isaac Crumbley, the director of CDEP.

He says the program's students earn two bachelor's degrees both from Fort Valley State and from one of the program's partnering universities.

"Half of my resume is because of CDEP," Jachin Myers said with a laugh.

Myers is a senior at Fort Valley State and hopes to become an engineer after receiving his second degree.

He says he wants other students like him to become interested in the field.

"A lot of African-Americans may not get the exposure to it. It's something that they could possibly like, but no one's talking about engineering or equations on a day to day basis," said Myers.

With the rate of African-American math graduates.that may change for newer generations.

Crumbley says around 130 students have acquired stem-related careers since it was founded in 1983. 45 of them have become scientists or engineers.
