Mother enters guilty plea in daughter's methadone overdose

A Kentucky woman pleaded guilty Wednesday morning to killing her 8-year-old daughter with a methadone overdose.

Today in Peach County Superior Court, Traci Asberry pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and distribution of methadone.

Hannah Bayne died in 2010 in a Peach County motel. Investigators believed at first that she died of natural causes, but toxicology tests showed methadone in her system.

District Attorney David Cooke says Asberry was driving through Central Georgia to pill mills in Florida and brought her daughter on the trip.

He says the mother gave Hannah methadone to calm her down, but gave her an adult dose.

Today, Asberry was sentenced to 10 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter -- nine to serve, with one year's probation. She can have no unsupervised contact with a child.

The two charges carried a combined 11 years' probation.

13WMAZ's Kristen Swilley was in the courtroom and she'll have more on this story on Eyewitness News at 5 and 6.
