New Restaurant Opens in Roberta | News
A new restaurant in Roberta opened Monday and owners say what makes it stand out is that it combines good food and a little bit of history for patrons.
It's called Champion's and it's located on North Dugger Street in Roberta.
The idea all started when the property that Roberta Champion lived in was put on the market. The town of Roberta was named after Champion.
"It is the home of Roberta Champion for whom the town of Roberta was named and as a historical landmark I hated to see what could happen to it," said Kathleen Cook, the owner.
The food has lunchtime classics like four-cheese broccoli and cheddar soup and sandwiches. They also have a full coffee bar. All made from scratch.
"What's really amazing to me I counted the other day I think there is right this second 148 recipes from scratch coming out the kitchen," said Scott Long, chef and general manager.
Scott Long leads the cooking team for Champion's. He was the co-owner of Macon's Joshua Cup. The coffee shop that was on Washington Avenue closed down this summer.
He said Joshua Cup is different from this new restaurant.
"There was a different clientele Downtown Macon was the lawyers, the attorneys, and the business folks, two or three different varieties of college kids," said Long. "So whatever was trendy or jet-set you can get by with."
But Long said if you liked the food and the coffee at the java spot, you will love Champion's.
"Quality levels are the same," said Long. "This is something that may be a little bit of a kissing cousin of it but this is all Roberta."
Champion's is open Monday-Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. They also offer free wi-fi for patrons. For more information, call 478-836-1819.
