The annual Focus on Education Banquet will be held at the Byron Municipal Complex on Feb. 24 at 6:30 p.m.

Fort Valley State Holds Teacher Recruitment Expo

 Fort Valley State University's (FVSU) Teacher Recruitment Expo is open to university juniors, seniors and graduate students majoring in teacher preparation programs and veteran teachers seeking to relocate.

More than 25 school systems from the states of  Florida and  Georgia will be available to discuss career opportunities in teaching.

The one-day program is being sponsored by FVSU’s Office of Career & Alumni Services in collaboration with the College of Education.

The event will take place in the Health & Physical Education Complex on FVSU's campus from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Miss Georgia Peach Pageant Applications

Miss Georgia Peach Scholarship Applications are now being accepted through March 7.

The pageant is Saturday, March 12.

Queens will serve as official ambassadors during the Georgia Peach Festival in June and will be recognized by the House of Representatives, Senate and Governor in Atlanta in February.

The Miss Georgia Peach Queen will receive a $1000 savings bond. All queens receive a crown, banner and gifts.

The age divisions are:

Tiny Miss: 4-6 years

Little Miss: 7-10 years

Teen Miss: 14-16 years, includes interview

Miss: 17-23 years, includes interview

The event will take place at the Pettigrew Center at Fort Valley State University.

Students to Compete in Regional Science and Engineering Fair

The Houston Regional Science and Engineering Fair will be held Feb. 2 – 4, 2011, at the Robins Air Force Base Museum of Aviation in the Century of Flight Hangar.  An awards ceremony will be held Friday, Feb. 4, at 6:30 p.m. 

More than 600 middle and high school students from Houston County and Peach County public and private schools will compete, a Houston County Board of Education press release says.

The fair is open to the public from 10:00 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 4.  Students will setup their display boards on Tuesday, Feb. 1, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Judges will interview participants on Wednesday, Feb. 2. 

Three individual grand prizes will be awarded - one for the junior division and two for the senior division.  One team grand prize will also be awarded to a senior team. 

Cook-off Competition Comes to Fort Valley State University

The First Annual Get Active for Life, Campus Style Challenge Iron Chef Healthy Cook-Off Competition is coming to Fort Valley State University (FVSU).

The competition will consist of four student teams who will compete with their culinary skills in front of a panel of judges and an audience.

Each team has to prepare an original and healthy recipe that students could prepare on a minimal budget.

Recipes will be judged on nutritional value, creativity, taste, use of healthy ingredients and presentation.

The winning team will receive $300.

Polly's Hospitality Institute's CEC Chef Instructor Doug Sanneman will serve as the guest chef.

The event will take place in FVSU's stadium Amenities Building at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 26.

The four teams are: Upsilon Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, the campus radio station Power Jamz 104.3, FVSU Cheerleaders and Gamma Zeta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc.
