2nd Congressional District to hold delegate training

A delegate training will be held for the 2nd Congressional district in February.

According to a news release, it will be held February 6, 2016 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hunt Educational and Cultural Recreation Center, located at 600 Spruce Street, in Fort Valley.

The training, the release states, is the first step in the delegate selection process. The Democratic National Convention will be in July in Philadelphia.

Free women's self defense class to be held in Fort Valley

Free women's self defense class to be held in Fort Valley

If you're looking to learn some self-defense moves, a free class will be held Saturday in Fort Valley.

According to a Peach County Chamber of Commerce news release, it will be held at the Austin Theater, located at 116 E Main St., in Fort Valley from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. 

HODAC is partnering with the Fort Valley Public Safety Department to hold the workshop in Fort Valley. The organization "Fight Like a Woman" holds free self-defense classes for women monthly. According to the release, the workship will provide women with skills, training and a sense of empowerment. The instructors, Sensei Moodie and Sensei Warren, have experience in Karate, Taekwon Do and Judo combined.

Women who attend must wear tennis shoes and comfortable exercise clothes.

CGTC Board of Directors Chair elected

CGTC Board of Directors Chair elected

Houston County retired superintendent was also elected to the vice chair position for 2014-2015.

Twiggs County resident and retired educator, Sarah Hawthorne, was named as the chair of CGTC's Board of Directors.

According to a release, she also served as the vice chair of the Board in the past year, when CGTC and MGTC merged.

She'll serve a one-year term.

CGTC's board of directors is comprised of a group of business leaders from the eleven counties CGTC serves in Baldwin, Bibb, Crawford, Dooly, Houston, Jones, Monroe, Peach, Pulaski, Putnam and Twiggs counties.

UGA extension releases cotton weed control guidelines

The Dooly County UGA extension has released programs for Controlling Glyphosate Resistant Palmer Amaranth in Cotton.

In a blog post, Jay Porter says it's important for "not just the present, but for the future of weed control in cotton."

Porter warns that not closely following the guidelines could prevent cotton growth in the future.
