Scamming targeting Byron drivers

Byron police say they're looking for two men they say are targeting travelers and the elderly with a car-repair scam.

A police news release says the men spray brake fluid behind people's back tires. They tell the drivers they have a brake-line leak and that the car is dangerous to drive.

They also tell the drivers that they are mechanics at Jeff Smith Ford and Chevrolet in Byron, and one presents a fake ID.

Additional molestation charges filed against school worker

A Crawford County school employee facing a dozen charges, including child molestation, will face additional charges.

The Crawford County Sheriff's Office said Friday that Carlteze James Saffold, 28, will face five additional charges of child molestation.

Saffold, a para-professional at Crawford County Middle School, was originally charged in October with four counts of sexual exploitation of children, four counts of enticing a child for indecent purposes, and four counts of molestation.

Crawford Co. judge pleads guilty to theft

Former Crawford County Magistrate Judge Andrea Peterman found herself on the other side of the bench Monday morning as she plead guilty to theft by taking and violation of her public oath.

Peterman admitted to taking money from the Magistrate Court offices for personal use and then trying to put the money back.

It's unclear how much money she took, but District Attorney David Cooke says on the day the Magistrate Court was audited, there was $1,800 unaccounted for.

Firefighter accused of stealing gas from fire truck

Crawford County sheriff's officials arrested a firefighter Friday accusing him of stealing gas from a fire truck.

Crawford fire Chief Randall Pate met with Sheriff Lewis Walker and investigators at the beginning of this month telling them someone was stealing gas from his fire truck.

After an investigation, Quatavin Yamond Harris, 23, of Roberta, a Station 7 firefighter, was arrested, according to a Crawford County sheriff's news release.

Arrest made in fatal Crawford hit-and-run

Crawford County deputies arrested a man charging him with the Nov. 12 hit and run accident that killed a bicyclist.

Michael Shaun Bryant, 36, was charged Wednesday night with homicide by vehicle (first degree), hit and run, failure to report accident and following to closely, according to a sheriff's office news release.

Bryant is accused of hitting Ricky Dennis Bacchus, 36, of Lizella at around 7:20 a.m. on Sandy Point Road near Creekview Drive.

Man Accused of Shooting Grandparents has Previous Charges in Sumter Co.

The bond hearing for 25-year-old Joshua Allen Cook, the man accused of shooting both of his grandparents in Warner Robins this week, has been moved to next Thursday.

Cook is charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon in that case.

But it turns out this incident wasn't the first time Cook may have been involved in violent acts.

Chief Deputy Eric Bryant of the Sumter County Sheriff's Office says Cook also has two other pending aggravated assault cases stemming from an incident in Americus in September 2012.
