Task force to make DFCS head report to governor

(WXIA) -- Gov. Nathan Deal's office is preparing an announcement on changes to organizational structure at the Division of Family and Children Services, sources tell 11Alive's Rebecca Lindstrom.

According to the sources, DFCS will be separate from DHS and the head of DFCS will report directly to the governor instead of the commissioner.

Sharon Hill is currently the head of DFCS, reporting to DHS Commissioner Keith Horton. Hill inherited a problem plagued agency last Fall, problems Horton himself seemed unable to fix. She started just weeks after the death of Emani Moss. Soon after, 11Alive broke the news of a federal warning letter, sent to DFCS concerned about ongoing issues with its food stamp program. Neither cases were the result of decisions made by Hill, but it is unclear whether in the political fallout, she will be able to maintain leadership of DFCS. More information on the change will come following a task force meeting, which will take place at Emory Law School Thursday afternoon. The task force is set up to audit the DFCS system and suggest changes.
