Jailhouse Alley Artists Show Off Paintings In Fort Valley
News

A Fort Valley art group kicked off its 45th show on Saturday.

The Jailhouse Alley Arts Center is made up of a group of artists who come together once a week to paint.

On Saturday, the community got a chance to buy their paintings. The paintings were mostly watercolors, acrylics, and oils.

The group says they first met at a small building behind the jailhouse. The name of the group, Jailhouse Alley, stuck.

Margaret Mathews is the group's president.  She says all the artists have a love of art that is reflected back in their paintings.

"I think art is always important to a community," Mathews says. "It just gives it a different flavor and quality that every community needs.  Whether it's graphic art, or music, or drama."

Some of the proceeds from paintings sold go to a scholarship fund, Mathews said.  The other proceeds go back to the artists.

Mathews says anyone is welcome to take lessons with the group. They're held on Thursday nights at Fort Valley High School.
