Peach County Prisoner Back in Jail

Peach County Sheriff Terry Deese says the sex offender who escaped on Wednesday was found half a mile from the jail.

Deese says the prisoner, Damon Ferguson, had been hiding under a house on Valley Drive since Wednesday. He says Ferguson stepped out to get some sun when someone saw him and called police.

"He just laid down when police pulled up," Deese said. "He was covered in dirt. You could tell he had been under the house."

Ferguson said he was cold and hungry and wanted to go back to the jail, according to Deese. He says Ferguson won't be put in the same cell he escaped from.

Deese says he is making security changes at the jail after the escape.

"The construction has us handicapped," Deese said on Friday. "We're trying to get our security back."

It says the man drove off, and when police stopped the car, the passenger ran away.

Police say they arrested him at his Byron home just before 4:00 Friday morning.

They say 20-year-olds Rennard Turner and Jeremy Tripp are charged with armed robbery.

Turner is also charged with aggravated assault on a person over 65 and using a firearm while committing a felony.

Peach County Still Searching for Escaped Sex Offender

The search continues in Peach County for Damon Ferguson, the sex offender who escaped from jail on Wednesday, that's according to Sheriff Terry Deese.

Deese says they are continuing the search by interviewing people who know Ferguson.

Deese says Ferguson of Byron has been in the jail since Oct. 21 on several charges including failing to register as a sex offender. He says Ferguson is on the  sex offender list for sexual battery in Houston County. Ferguson's other charges include burglary, theft by taking, and theft by receiving.

Jail officials realized around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday that he had escaped, Deese said.

He said Ferguson apparently jimmied open a holding cell and somehow grabbed a set of keys that let him out an exterior door. Because of construction under way at the jail, he said, an exterior gate was open.

Anyone with information on Ferguson's whereabouts can call Peach County 911.

Smith won't take part in Saturday's Pioneer Bowl in Columbus against St. Augustine's College.

Chief Lonnie Holder said officers pulled over Smith's 1999 Nissan Maxima around 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 24 for a tint violation. He was driving on Highway 96 from Fort Valley toward Taylor County.
